The Palm Guide to Nail Health
Healthy Nails. Thoughtful Care. A Higher Standard.
At Palm Nail Lounge, we believe exceptional nail care begins with the health of the natural nail.
A manicure should do more than look lovely on the day of your appointment. How your nails are prepared, maintained and cared for between visits matters just as much as the finished result.
From careful preparation and professional removal to nourishing treatments and everyday habits, our approach is centered on preserving the integrity of the natural nail while giving you the freedom to enjoy the services you love.

The Foundation
Understanding Your Natural Nails
Your nails are made primarily of keratin, a protective protein that forms the nail plate. New nail growth begins beneath the skin at the nail matrix, while the surrounding cuticle helps protect the area where the nail grows from outside irritants and infection.
Although nails are naturally resilient, repeated trauma, excessive filing, improper removal and prolonged exposure to moisture or harsh chemicals can leave them brittle, thin or prone to splitting.
Unlike skin, the visible nail plate cannot repair itself once its layers have been damaged or removed. Instead, the affected portion must gradually grow out as new nail develops.
Preserving the natural nail means protecting its structure, minimizing unnecessary trauma, keeping the nails and surrounding skin conditioned, and choosing services that are appropriate for their current condition.
Healthy nail care is not about avoiding manicures. It is about choosing the right services, proper techniques and consistent maintenance.
Know the Causes
What Can Compromise Nail Health?
Our nails are exposed to more than we often realize. Everyday activities, repeated exposure to water and cleaning products, improper nail preparation and removal, and even small habits such as picking or biting can gradually affect their condition.
One of the most common concerns we see is nails that have become thin, brittle, peeling or sensitive. While there can be several contributing factors, unnecessary trauma to the nail plate is something we believe deserves particular attention.
Excessive filing, aggressive buffing and forcefully removing gel or enhancements can strip away layers of the natural nail, leaving it weakened and more vulnerable to breakage.
Understanding what can cause damage is the first step toward preventing it.

Removal Matters
The Importance of Proper Removal
How a manicure is removed matters just as much as how it is applied.
Through our firsthand experience at Palm Nail Lounge, we’ve seen how often clients arrive with nails that have been compromised by improper removal. Sometimes it’s the result of picking or peeling off gel at home. Other times, it may be excessive filing or overly aggressive removal techniques during previous nail services.
What many people don’t realize is that repeated trauma can gradually thin the nail plate. Once those layers have been removed, they cannot simply be restored with another manicure. The damaged portion must grow out as new nail develops. This is why we place such importance on careful enhancement removal.
Different nail systems require different techniques. Some products can be dissolved using the appropriate remover, while others must be carefully filed down by a Certified Technician. In either case, protecting the natural nail should always remain the priority.
At Palm, we believe a beautiful manicure should never come at the unnecessary expense of your natural nails.
A Simple Rule
Don’t Pick. Don’t Peel.
We understand how tempting it can be to pull at lifting gel or an enhancement.
But when product is peeled away, layers of the natural nail may come with it, leaving the surface thinner, rougher and more vulnerable to splitting.
Never forcefully remove gel, acrylic or builder gel at home.
If your manicure begins lifting, cracking or separating, have it professionally assessed rather than attempting to remove it yourself.

Timing
The Lifecycle of Your Gel Manicure
Knowing when to maintain or remove your manicure is another important part of protecting your natural nails.
Even when gel polish or an enhancement still looks perfectly intact, the natural nail continues to grow beneath it. As time passes, changes in balance, lifting or separation can place additional stress on the nail. Understanding when your manicure needs attention can help prevent avoidable damage.
2–3 weeks
Time to Refresh
For many clients, this is an appropriate time to assess their gel manicure for removal or renewal. The finish may still look smooth and glossy, but natural nail growth can begin to affect its appearance and balance.
4–5 weeks
Increased Risk of Lifting
As the nail grows, lifting, cracks and separation may become more likely. Loose edges can catch on clothing or hair, placing additional stress on the natural nail.
6+ weeks
Don’t Delay Removal
Extended wear, particularly when lifting is present, can allow moisture and debris to collect beneath the product. This can increase the risk of irritation, bacterial growth and nail damage.
The appropriate maintenance schedule depends on the product, natural nail growth and condition of the manicure.
If you notice lifting, don’t wait for your next scheduled appointment.

A More Natural Approach
There are times when a gentler approach to nail care may be the better choice.
Whether you’re taking a break from enhancements, caring for fragile nails or simply prefer a more natural finish, Palm offers alternatives that allow you to continue enjoying well-groomed nails while being mindful of their condition.

Japanese Manicure — Nourish & Refine
Our Japanese manicure uses the traditional P.Shine paste-and-powder system to condition and polish the natural nail.
The treatment incorporates ingredients such as squalane, glycerin, vitamin E derivatives and ceramide NP, with specialized buffing techniques that create a smooth, luminous finish.
With no polish, gel or artificial coating, it offers an understated alternative for clients who want to embrace their natural nails or take a break from enhancements.
The treatment improves the appearance and feel of the natural nail, although it cannot reverse existing structural damage. Because the technique involves buffing, severely thinned or damaged nails may benefit from allowing new growth before receiving this service.

Dazzle Dry — A Cleaner Approach to Color
For clients who prefer polished nails without gel, Dazzle Dry offers a thoughtful alternative.
This vegan, cruelty-free lacquer system is formulated without several ingredients used in conventional nail products. It air-dries in approximately five minutes, without UV or LED curing.
Dazzle Dry offers rich color and extended wear while allowing for removal with conventional nail polish remover rather than gel-specific removal techniques.
It is an appealing option for clients who want lasting color without committing to a gel service.

Everyday Habits for Healthier Nails
Keep nails and cuticles conditioned.
Regular moisturizing helps reduce dryness and brittleness, particularly after handwashing and polish removal.
Wear gloves for household chores.
Repeated exposure to water, detergents and cleaning products can weaken nails and irritate surrounding skin.
Never use your nails as tools.
Opening cans, scraping labels or picking at hard surfaces can lead to cracks and separation.
Keep a manageable nail length.
A length suited to your lifestyle helps reduce accidental impact and breakage.
Protect your cuticles.
The cuticle serves as a protective barrier. Avoid picking, cutting or aggressively pushing it back.
Avoid excessive filing and buffing.
Repeatedly thinning the nail plate can leave nails fragile, sensitive and more vulnerable to breakage.
Choose professional removal.
Have gel, acrylic and other enhancements removed using methods appropriate for the specific product.
Pay attention to changes.
Persistent discoloration, pain, swelling, separation of the natural nail or unusual changes in texture should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
When to Step Back
When Your Nails Need a Little Extra Care
There are times when a simpler manicure may be the better choice.
If your nails are unusually thin, brittle, peeling or sensitive, consider temporarily stepping away from enhancements and choosing a gentle natural-nail service or going without polish.
A Japanese manicure may provide a conditioned, polished appearance without a coating, while Dazzle Dry offers a non-gel option for clients who still prefer color. Neither treatment repairs damaged nail layers, and the right choice depends on the condition of your nails.
For nails that have been significantly weakened, sometimes the most thoughtful treatment is allowing the natural nail time to grow without additional product or buffing.
Fingernails typically take approximately six months to grow out completely, although individual growth rates vary. During that time, gentle maintenance, hydration and protection from further trauma can help preserve the new growth.
